This course explores the fundamental concept of free speech, its historical development, and its role in democratic societies. The curriculum will cover the philosophical and legal foundations of free speech, examine contemporary issues and debates surrounding it, and explore its limitations, such as hate speech and misinformation. By the end of this course, participants will understand the importance of free speech and be able to critically engage in discussions about its role in both public and private spheres.

The Foundations of Free Speech in a Democratic Society

Public Demonstration

The Foundations of Free Speech in a Democratic Society is a 6-week program (Weekly 2-hour sessions) during which the student learns about free speech in a democratic society.

Target Audience: High school and college students, community members, activists, and anyone interested in learning about free speech in a democratic society.

Week 1: The Foundations of Free Speech

Week 2: Legal Frameworks of Free Speech

Week 3: The Role of Free Speech in Society

Week 4: Limits on Free Speech

Week 5: Free Speech in the Digital Age

Week 6: Contemporary Challenges and the Future of Free Speech

 

Evaluation: Participants will be evaluated on their participation in class discussions, completion of written assignments, and a final group project that involves the creation of a policy brief or media campaign on free speech.
