COURSE OVERVIEW

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the principles, structure, and functioning of democratic systems. It will provide an understanding of democratic governance, citizen participation, human rights, and the rule of law. By the end of this course, participants will have a solid grasp of the foundational elements that support democracies and the role of individuals and institutions within them.

Understanding the Foundations of Democracy

Understanding the Foundations of Democracy is a 6-week program (Weekly 2-hour sessions) during which the student learns about democratic systems and processes.

Target Audience: Students, community members, activists, new voters, and anyone interested in understanding democratic systems and processes.

Week-by-Week Breakdown:

Week 1: What is Democracy?

Week 2: The Rule of Law and Separation of Powers

Week 3: The Role of Citizens in Democracy

Week 4: Human Rights and Democracy

Week 5: Challenges to Democracy

Week 6: Global Perspectives on Democracy

Evaluation: Participants will be evaluated through participation in discussions, completion of group projects, and a final exam or project that assesses their understanding of democratic principles and their ability to apply them in real-world contexts.
